To Sicily - 2011
The longest trip to date: 3425 miles (5500km) in 42 flights. Blessed with 7 days of horizon to horizon sunshine, 30plus degree warmth and steady tail winds. However, 4 days were needed to get into Italy, and 2.5 to get back. Wonderful flying below the radar, but needing a few encounters with larger airports and for crossing some controlled zones. GP and transponder failed on Day 2, but were repaired by Michele Albertino at Acqui Terme (Liguria). Good facilites at Aerohotels in Pratello, Eremo della Giubilina and Castel del Monte. Also great support from local clubs, especially Giuseppe & Laura Pontoriero at Rombiolo (Ali Calabria). Overcome by "Get-homeitis" for Channel Crossing on way back, and needed assistance from the Distress and Diversion Cell at Farnborough to identify and get to an airfield not clouded in. Great service, perhaps life saving, but the fault was mine.
