VIDEOS ARE PROPERTY OF ANDY OLIVER. Not to be used without permission.
I purchased a GoPro at the start of the 2020 season. However, I kept forgetting to use it, and then it takes a while to learn how to edit what little footage was captured, even in a basic manner. I ascribe this to my pre-departure routine being focused on flying to the next new field. Did I say that I flew 3,500 miles over the summer? However, I have managed to anticipate, and edit, a few situations worth recording for posterity. I try to keep my videos Short - Precise - Different.
Many pilots seem to be motivated by filming themselves flying, rather than the flying itself. You will have seen this type: view from inside the cockpit, with pilot prominent (even of just back of head), from start up to shut down. Flight from same old field to somewhere close by, and then back again. Hint of exceptional danger or remarkable event in the video's title. 20-30 minutes the viewer will never get back !
The absence of Likes and Comments might, possibly, reflect the interest and value to the community of such use of the GoPose...........

.......so I was particularly pleased that my first effort and offering on Facebook "Microlight Pilots" received 56 likes. The accompanying text was:
A Summer Reveal in 60 seconds. I just love a good 'reveal' on take-off. Those 30-45 seconds when the airfield perimeter transforms into the first horizon of one's next flight. Especially satisfying on the first time out of a new airstrip. This one is emphasized by the high corn on either side of the runway (which is 36). Can you work out where in the United Kingdom it is? You have 50 seconds to orientate yourself from the clues. Tough one for non-UK members, but the answer is shown in the last 5 seconds. Perhaps this might start a series: a sort of winter quiz till we can all enjoy more 'reveals' next season. © 2020 AROliver |
LAKES, PEAKS AND RIDGES 65 miles in 4 minutes.
This video takes you on a tour of the northern Lake District. I was trying out the multiple exposure mode, and then edited it at half speed. It was early on a June summer morning, out of Troutbeck. With 2 beefy boys on board I had to put in a 360 to get over Scafell Pike (3,209ft - 978m). Not much, but the highest point in England, and flying in Wales and Scotland was locked. Wind was 10-15mph (16-25kph) and there was turbulence over the ridges. When doing it solo, the previous evening, there was zero wind. Ridge running still impossible due to the large number of people seeking to film the sunset - so any breaking of the 500ft rule was likely to be filmed. There must have been 30 people, and many tents, on Helvellyn alone. © 2020 AROliver |

Flex-wing over Cornwall. 60 seconds
99% of my flying has been alone, so I find the rare sight of another flex-wing in flight both novel and beautiful. This is June 2020, during an 48hour/6 field expedition with Lee McIlwaine (G-OGOD). The flight is from Porthtowan to Bodmin (29 miles - 47km). © 2020 AROliver Music: Andy McKee "The Art of Motion". |
Landing on Lundy Island. 5 minutes
Lundy is 2 miles long and some 11 miles (17km) off the coast of Devonshire, where the Bristol Channel meets The Atlantic. It is the graveyard of some 200 ships, plus a Heinkel 1-11 bomber in 1941. It is run by The National Trust and The Landmark Trust, primarily for tourism and holiday rentals. The runway is concave and bumpy. Sheep are a hazard. The video shows more sheep on the strip for the landing itself than for the preceding low pass to clear them. I was touring with Lee McIlwaine, and we camped overnight, refreshing ourselves at The Morisco Tavern. The light and colours on this June day were the best I have seen, Cornwall Flying Club hold a Lundy Fly-In every year. © 2020 AROliver |

Landing at my home base: Weston Zoyland - SW England 1m 20s
I got the GoPose at the start of the 2020 season, but kept on forgetting to set it up before I flew. This is a clip from a February 2020 circuit. Weston Zoyland is at 30ft AMSL. It sits on the Somerset Levels, which were under the sea only 5000 years ago. Some 1500 years of ditching and draining have rendered it habitable. It had some 10 years of RAF and USAF use around WW2, and the current WZ Flying Club benefits from the drainage that was installed. Much of the surrounding agricultural land floods in winter. © 2020 AROliver |
